Life in Ancient Iran: A Presentation by Massoume Price

April 17, 2009

UBC Persian Club, in collaboration with Anahita productions, is proud to host Ms. Massoume Price in a presentation session on Life in Ancient Iran.

Have you always been hearing about Rich Persian Culture? Are you carrying this question of why should we be proud of it?

Here is your chance to hear some facts from an expert: Massoume Price, Author of the book “Ancient Iran”.

“An active member of both the Iranian and Canadian communities, Massoume has been living in Canada since 1981. She is a social anthropologist born in Iran and was educated in Iran and United Kingdom at London University, Kings and University Colleges. Since 1995, she has devoted all her time researching Iranian culture and her many articles published in Iran and America have attracted a large audience.

Her new book ‘Ancient Iran’ has recently won an award for best multicultural non-fiction from the Moonbeam’s Children’s Book Awards. It is also a feature book at the British Museum’s current exhibition ‘Shah ‘Abbas: The Remaking of Iran’.

Ms. Price has written extensively on many aspects of Iranian culture, such as, codes of behavior, male/female and parent/children relationships. Her web site, www.cultureofiran.com, is used extensively as an on-line reference source. The site provides credible information on history, symbolism, evolution and present practices of major Iranian rites, ceremonies festivals and codes of behavior etc. The site has become a focal point for both researchers and general public with respect to Iranian culture.

She has been a speaker at a number of functions and organizations such as the “Center for Iranian Research and Analysis” (CIRA) at the University of Toronto and the Anthropology Museum in Vancouver. She has been interviewed by CBC radio with regards to the Iranian New Year (No Ruz) as well as other events and has been a guest on Fanny Kiefer’s popular talk show, Studio 4 on Shaw cable. She has been extensively involved in organizing lectures, concerts, exhibitions and facilitating exchange and interaction between the Iranians and the Canadian community at large. UBC Persian Club at the Chahar Shanbe Suri at Ambleside Park

March 5, 2009

UBC Persian Club is proud to invite you to our information booth at the Chahar-shanbe Suri at the Ambleside Park. This year we will be distributing Hafiz Poetry, and do face painting to raise money for cancer research.

Chahārshanbe-Sūri (Persian: چهارشنبه‌سوری), pronounced Chārshanbe-Sūri (Persian: چارشنبه‌سوری) is an ancient Iranian festival dating at least back to 1700 BCE of the early Zoroastrian era. The festival of fire is a prelude to the ancient Norouz festival, which marks the arrival of spring and revival of nature. Chahrshanbeh Soori, is celebrated the last Tuesday night of the year. The word Chahar Shanbeh means Wednesday and Suri is red. Bonfires are lit at sunset and the idea is to not let the sun set. Bonfires are lit to keep the sun alive till early hours of the morning. The celebration usually starts in the evening. On this occasion people make bonfires on the streets and jump over them. The young shoot fireworks before and during Chaharshanbe Soori (literally: Red-Colored Wednesday). In older Iranian dialects such as Pashto (Pashtoons also celebrate this annual event and call it “Sheshbieh”), “soor” means the color “red”…. [Wikipedia.org]

Come and join us to celebrate the arrival of spring and sing: “Sorkhi e to az man, Zardi e man az to” translated to “Give me your redness, and take my paleness” while jumping over the bon fires.

Iranian Canadian Congress at BC is organizing the night of the event. They are looking for volunteers for the night of the event. The volunteers will be served free dinner and refreshments during the event. Also, ICC will provide the volunteers with reference/recommendation letters in appreciation of your help with this event.
